Overview
Accessible university websites on WordPress
-
01
The challenge
A university website serves prospective students, current students, researchers, staff, alumni and the public — usually with hundreds of editors spread across faculties and services. Without a shared platform, every department ends up with its own theme, its own plugins and its own accessibility problems.
-
02
Our approach
Accessibility is no longer optional. In the US, the Department of Justice’s ADA Title II rule requires public colleges and universities to meet WCAG 2.1 AA, with compliance due by 26 April 2027 for larger public entities after the 2026 extension. Yet WebAIM’s 2026 analysis found detectable WCAG failures on 95.9% of the top million home pages. We build accessibility into the components themselves, so editors can’t easily publish an inaccessible page.

What you get
A WordPress multisite network gives each school or department its own site on a shared, centrally maintained foundation: one brand system, one set of tested blocks, shared news and events, campus single sign-on and course finders connected to your student systems. We then train your editors and leave documentation that keeps the platform sustainable.
Is this you?
A good fit if…

FAQ
Questions, answered
Can each department manage its own site?
Yes. Multisite lets departments publish independently while sharing the central brand and components.
How do you handle accessibility?
Components are built and tested to WCAG 2.2 AA, and we audit templates with assistive technology.
Do you train editors?
We run training sessions and provide documentation tailored to your platform.
Does the Title II rule apply to private universities?
Title II covers public entities. Private institutions are generally covered by other laws such as ADA Title III, where similar expectations apply — so WCAG 2.1 AA, or 2.2, is the sensible baseline for every institution.
Can you integrate with our student information system?
Yes. We connect course and programme finders to SIS and catalogue data through APIs or scheduled imports, so programme content stays accurate.
Can you consolidate our existing department sites?
Yes. We audit them, migrate content onto the network and redirect old URLs so nothing is lost along the way.
